In Their Own Words:

Union County Cancer Society “Hits a Home Run”
6 August 2010

Bryan Oiler, of Raymond, receives financial assistance for mileage reimbursement to and from treatments from the Union County Cancer Society (represented by Karen Ruetty). Oiler was diagnosed with prostate cancer five years ago. The firefighter shares his story with United Way donors here to thank you for your support.

Dear United Way donors,

I never thought I would need help from anyone, as I am a “self-starter.” I’ve lived my whole life under the assumption that no matter what life threw at me, I would counter with a left hook and catch it off guard.

Well, “cancer” happened. And I did not see that one coming.

You see, I am a firefighter and paramedic and work for a paid full-time department. I’m the one usually giving the help and not taking it. So the tables were turned. The treatments and cost, along with the emotional toll on myself and family has been something new to us.

But the United Way and
Union County Cancer Society stepped up to the plate and hit a home run!!! This really came at a time of need. I never thought we would be in such a financially difficult rut. But United Way came through. I guess the stories are really true. They are a helping hand.

I’ve always donated to United Way and never thought that “I” would ever need it. But of course, that’s not the reason we donate, right? Do the right thing and donate. And know that the family you help today might just be yours tomorrow!!

Thank you to all that donate. ---- Bryan Oiler, Raymond, Ohio
