| Many factors can cause the “holiday blues.” Stress, fatigue, unrealistic expectations, over-commercialization,
financial constraints, and the inability to be with one’s family and friends. The demands of shopping, parties,
family reunions and house guests also contribute to feelings of tension. People may also develop other stress responses
such as headaches, excessive drinking, over-eating and difficulty sleeping. Even more people experience post-holiday
let down. With some practical tips, you can minimize the stress and depression that often accompany the holidays. You may even end up enjoying the holidays more than you thought you would. 1. Practice moderation in your activities, as well as in eating, drinking, and spending. Don't get overtired. Let others share in the responsibility of planning activities. "Delegate, delegate, delegate." Get input from the family and nail down who is responsible for what. 2. Be realistic about what you can and cannot do. Prioritize by listing what must be done and what would be nice to do. As pressure mounts, relax and concentrate on the must do list. 3. Schedule time to enjoy holiday activities, especially the free activities such as admiring holiday decorations, concerts, displays, or making snow-angels with children. 4. For a special "lift", surprise someone with unexpected kindness by doing something for someone else. It will make his/her day and your holiday. 5. Spend time with supportive and caring people. Reach out and make new friends, or contact someone you have lost touch with over the years. 6. Recharge your batteries! Get a massage, schedule a facial, haircut, or a pedicure. 7. Occasionally stop and take some deep breaths and remind yourself of what the holiday season is truly about and count your blessings. 8, Take in a movie or watch a DVD/video that you have been meaning to see. Surf the web for funny videos and jokes. 9. Make some time for yourself. Spending just 15 minutes alone, without distractions, may refresh you enough to handle everything you need to do. Find a quiet place, even if it's the bathroom for a few minutes of solitude, Take a walk at night and stargaze. Listen to soothing or favorite music. Find something that reduces stress by clearing your mind, slowing your breathing and restoring inner calm. 10. Get relief from stress fast by: taking a bubble bath, taking time with your pet, exercising, chewing sugarless gum, laughing out loud, or eating chocolate! |
