What it does:
There are three parts to the Memorial Meals Program based out of Memorial Hospital of Union County:
- Mobile Meals. This is basically what you think of when you say "meals-on-wheels."
Memorial Hospital staff prepare warm, nutritious meals that volunteer drivers deliver to homebound residents in
Union County each weekday. Eligible residents must be at least 60 years of age, unable to prepare their own
meals, unable to participate in the Community Meals program, and/or be the spouse of an eligible participant.
The drivers also visit with recipients when they make their deliveries, checking in on them and making sure they're
OK.
- Community Meals. This program serves the same lunch menu at four
sites each weekday around 11:30 a.m.: Windsor Manor West and Windsor Hi-Rise in Marysville, the Pleasant
Valley Senior Center in Plain City, and the Richwood Civic Center. Participants must be at least 60 years
old to receive financial assistance from United Way, though anyone can come and take the meal. Reservations
to eat should be made by 9:30 a.m. on the date you
wish to eat by contacting 578-2445.
- Supplemental Meals. This program provides the same service to homebound
residents as the Mobile Meals Program, but these are for residents under the age of 60 unable to prepare a Noon
meal and with no one else to do it for them.
Fast Facts:
- The average cost of a meal is $4.50
- United Way money pays the difference between what a resident can afford to pay and the cost
of the meal so that no one is turned away.
- Memorial Meals serves an average of 350 meals a day.
