Union County can celebrate another milestone achievement. United Way is projecting that it will surpass its $900,000 campaign goal this year.

Donations to the local organization’s annual fundraiser currently total $841,574, which is 94 percent of goal. Reports from out-of-county workplaces will continue to come in through the spring, which United Way projects will take the campaign totals near $910,000. The campaign yielded over $880,000 last year.

Money raised by United Way funds more than 40 social service programs that serve roughly 18,500 people each quarter in Union County, including six area pantries, four senior centers, two shelters, rent and utility assistance, prescription medication, and youth activities. United Way will announce its 2012 allocations in January.

“Throughout our campaign presentations, we tried to be sensitive to the varying situations of the groups we spoke with, understanding that while the economy seems to be improving, there are many who are still hurting,” said Tony Eufinger, United Way’s Campaign Chair. “We asked them to put things in perspective. ‘Do you have a roof over your head? Food on the table? A job to report to? A car to take you there? Are you healthy? Can you pay all your bills? If you have everything that you need, then please give generously. And if you don’t have everything you need, here’s a list of resources where you can get the help you need.’ Those who were able to help certainly responded to the message!”

“Our largest supporting workplaces really drove the campaign this year,” said Dave Bezusko, United Way’s Campaign & Public Relations Director.

Bezusko reports that United Way’s top seven participating workplace campaigns combined for a $42,000 increase in giving (Honda of America, Mfg.; Scotts Miracle-Gro; Nationwide Insurance; Nestle Product Technology Center; Memorial Hospital of Union County and the Gables at Green Pastures; Veyance Technologies; and Marysville Schools), accounting for the difference in this year’s campaign.

“Veyance Technologies had the largest increase of any workplace, up from over $8,400 to over $26,000,” said Bezusko. “Our United Way Champions there really took ownership of the project this year. They shut down the lines and allowed us to come in and present to all associates, bought some terrific raffle prizes, and ran a textbook campaign.”

This will mark the seventh year in a row that United Way has increased donations and the second straight year it will surpass its goal. Donations to the 2011 United Way campaign are still being accepted. Bezusko says that you can still claim a tax deduction for this year if you make your gift by December 31. Donations can be made online at www.unitedwayofunioncounty.org, by mail at P.O. Box 145, Marysville, Ohio, 43040, or via the phone at (937) 644-8381.
